The Ancient Kingdom of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was the first and longest-lived capital of Sri Lanka, ruled by a succession of Sinhala kings from approximately the 4th century BCE to the 11th century CE – over 1,300 years of continuous civilisation centred on this remarkable city in the dry north-central plains. Planted in 288 BCE, it is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world, tended by an unbroken line of guardians for over 2,300 years.

The tree is housed within a golden-railed enclosure in the heart of the Mahamevnawa Gardens and draws thousands of white-clad pilgrims daily, particularly on poya (full moon) days.
